I've received more requests than ever to help clients prepare for extraordinarily long interview cycles.
The many hoops employers have all y'all jumping through is epic and they are super annoying and frustrating for sure.
What do I mean by LONG interview?
- Waiting many days or several weeks in between “next steps” communication with HR and hiring managers
- Conducting more than 3 rounds of interviews
- Meeting more than 5 members of the team
- Having half-day or full-day “back-to-back” interview sessions on Zoom
- Performing “homework” or a test of your strategy and/or skills that they expect for free
- Asking for and calling references at a leisurely pace
- Postponing hiring decision after process is already done
- Selecting zero candidates for the job and re-posting the job description to repeat the above cycle
What's the solution?
Expect a marathon, not a sprint.
Generate many opportunities at the same time.
Focus on your energy management in the moment.
Push back as necessary, especially around “free” work.
Understand that it's a buyer's market right now BUT you can always say NO.
What's the LONGEST hiring experience you've ever had?
