There's 3 common pitfalls to an email address on your resume and during your job hunt to avoid.
1. Your selected name is workplace inappropriate (such as “sexyflirtygirlinthecity@email.com” or “rippedmusclesdude@email.com”)
2. Your email domain automatically ends up in spam.
3. Your email domain makes you look old or older than you are.
Today we'll focus on #3, which will also help to improve #2. You need to be aware of which email domains are relevant in the marketplace.
Using an “old school” 👵🏻 email address makes you more subject to discrimination and implies you don't have valuable technology skills.
Avoid using these email providers on your resume and while networking:
AOL
Hotmail
MSN
Earthlink (yes, I've had mine since 1999)
Excite
Lycos
USA.net
Live
Juno
Netzero
Anything ending in .NET (like verizon.net)
Yahoo is still good with ESPs (email service providers) so you should generally monitor their popularity.
Gmail is your best bet.
Lastly if you have a Compuserve address I want to hug you because you're a technology pioneer and it's just cool – but still don't use it ok?!
What's your oldest email? Is this email address on your resume?
