It’s so fascinating sitting in the coach’s chair because I witness behavioral patterns from a privileged and very personal vantage point.
My master coach used to impress upon me that we coach what we are learning or what we have healed, and it would keep showing up because it was an earned gift.
Lately, I’ve had a rash of coaching sessions with clients experiencing mind-fog and blurred lines in their professional pursuits. They feel caught between two worlds and it’s a painful spot to be in.
Do you?
- Have a part-time job and a part-time business
- Work hard at the office but dream about an entirely different career
- Freelance your talent for gigs but don't brand your business
- Complain about being unemployed but you’re not seriously focused on your search
The reality is that you have created this between a rock-and-a-hard place situation and it actually suits you just fine…for the moment. Being pinned under a rock can actually feel safe, familiar and survivable, but it’s not what is truly desired.
The way out is to make a firm decision and pledge your commitment to match the intention.
What does this exercise look like? It looks like this:
- Setting a revenue target for your part-time business to exceed, moonlighting as much as possible, and then quitting your part-time job. The part-time job is just a bridge to your future; a temporary venture-backer if you will.
- Getting out of mental paralysis and being willing to explore other career options from the financially secure place of still having a great job.
- Claiming your talent and worth by properly branding and pricing your services and putting a stake in the ground that you’re here to stay.
- Practicing honesty about why you’re not searching diligently for a new job. Likely there is a greater emotional payoff for staying a home than returning to the office. Stop lying about your motives.
Where are you caught in two worlds?
I can promise you that when you release your old ways of thinking about your painful duality you will be set free.
I’ve experienced the benefits of this exercise time and time again in my business and personal life. For me, the big turning point was a few years ago when I made the decision to leave “freelancing” behind and become an official business owner. It felt like a massive relief to be 110% all-in to my business instead of half-hearted, and then the clients and the money that I wanted showed up.
